Barytes

Barium Sulphate

Barium sulphate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula BaSO4. It is a white crystalline solid that is odourless and insoluble in water. Barium sulphate occurs naturally as the mineral barite, which is widely distributed around the world and is used in various industries, including oil well drilling, plastics, elastomers, coatings, glass, and chemical manufacturing. In the chemical industry, barium sulphate powder is a raw material that is used in topcoats, varnishes, and spray paints due to its high cohesiveness, low light dispersion, and chemical resistance. Barium sulphate is also used as a filler for plastics and elastomers to increase the density of the polymer in vibrational mass damping applications. Its natural chemical inertness also makes it an ideal filler for products used in challenging environments.

Features and benefits

Barium sulphate is a versatile mineral that offers a range of features and benefits in elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and sealants. Some of the features of barium sulphate include fine particle size, chemical and weathering resistance, and high inertness.

These features make it especially suitable for filling materials of topcoats, varnishes, and spray paints. In elastomers, barium sulphate increases the hardness of silicone rubber and reduces its elasticity.

In coatings, it improves durability, processing rheology, and white pigment extension. In adhesives and sealants, it improves viscosity, thixotropy, and stability.

Barium sulphate is a cost-effective option for manufacturers looking to improve product performance while reducing costs and minimising their carbon footprint.

Industries

Coatings

All our Barium sulphates are jet milled which allows for a narrower particle size distribution, which can result in better dispersion, and improved performance in some applications. Jet milled barytes can have a higher brightness than precipitated barium sulphate, which can be beneficial in applications where whiteness is important. Of particular importance in coatings, lower oil absorption versus precipitated barium sulphate. One key advantage of Jet milled barytes is its generally more cost effective than precipitated barium sulphate.

Elastomers

Barytes is very effective in increasing the density of rubber products and improving abrasion resistance, making the rubber heavier as well as more durable and resistant to wear and tear. Barium Sulphate is used to increase the chemical resistance of rubber products in applications like automotive parts, industrial hoses, and conveyor belts.

Plastics

Barium sulphate is commonly used as a filler in plastics to increase the density of the polymer in vibrational mass damping applications. It improves the chemical resistance, heat resistance, and product appearance of plastics. Barium sulphate filler has an effect of increasing acid and alkali resistance and opacity. It is used in polypropylene and polystyrene plastics as a filler in proportions up to 70%.
